The Riga flat where the writer Andrejs Upīts (1877–1970) spent the last nineteen years of his life is preserved as his memorial museum. Upīts moved into Flat 4 at 38 Brīvības Street with his family in January 1951. The building dates from 1911 and was designed by architect Ernsts Pole to house a bank, with apartments on its top floors.
Three memorial rooms are open to visitors: the study, the guest room and the dining room. Their furnishings, household items and photographs, and above all a library of more than seven thousand books, reflect the writer's personality and the way he worked. A further guest room serves as an exhibition hall for exhibitions and events. The museum's holdings total more than thirty thousand items.
The museum was established in 1972 and has been open to the public since December 1974. At the same time, a house-museum was created in Skrīveri, the writer's native village.
