Independent, experimental and avant-garde cinema is the particular focus of Anthology Film Archives, an international center for the preservation, study and exhibition of film and video. It was founded in 1970 by the filmmakers and writers Jonas Mekas, Stan Brakhage, Jerome Hill, P. Adams Sitney and Peter Kubelka, and it suits visitors drawn to cinema outside the mainstream.
Anthology is both a film archive and a cinematheque, a theater devoted to screening film as an art form. It occupies 32 Second Avenue, on the southeast corner of East 2nd Street in Manhattan's East Village, within a New York City historic district.
