Visitors to the Apartheid Museum are randomly classified as either white or non-white at the door and directed to enter through the designated entrance. This opening experience introduces a museum devoted to apartheid and the 20th-century history of South Africa.
The museum opened in November 2001 in the south of Johannesburg as part of the Gold Reef City complex. It was established by an independent non-profit organisation, Akani Egoli, and built as an offshoot of the development of the Gold Reef City Casino. Several times each year it hosts events celebrating the end of apartheid and the beginning of multiracial democracy in South Africa.
