Housed in the Palace of Graphic Arts, a building put up on Montjuïc for the 1929 International Exposition, the Barcelona seat of the Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya traces human life in Catalonia from the earliest prehistoric settlers to the early Middle Ages. It is the hub of a wider network that also takes in the Greek and Roman ruins of Empúries, the Iberian town of Ullastret and a branch in Girona.
The galleries move chronologically through Palaeolithic and Neolithic finds, Bronze and Iron Age material, the Iberian peoples, and the Greek and Roman presence on the Catalan coast, ending with Visigothic objects. Mosaics, sculpture, pottery and everyday tools make up much of the display, giving a broad view of the region's ancient past.
The museum grew out of collections gathered in the early twentieth century and took its present form in the 1930s. It suits visitors with an interest in ancient history, and it pairs naturally with the other museums on Montjuïc.
