Tom Roberts' A break away!, a drover struggling to hold back a thirst-maddened flock in drought, is one of the best-known paintings of Australian colonial art, and it hangs on North Terrace in Adelaide. The Art Gallery of South Australia, founded in 1881, holds one of the country's strongest collections of Australian art. Works by Hans Heysen and Margaret Preston sit alongside a substantial representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.
The gallery's classical sandstone frontage belongs to the Elder Wing, which opened in 1900. Inside, the collection extends well beyond Australia, with European painting and sculpture, notable holdings of Morris & Co. design, and significant Asian art, particularly from Southeast Asia.
The gallery shares North Terrace with the South Australian Museum and the State Library, so it is easy to combine with other cultural stops nearby. It draws more than 400,000 visitors a year.
