A sailor and diplomat's private collection of Oriental art is the foundation of Warsaw's Asia and Pacific Museum (Muzeum Azji i Pacyfiku). Andrzej Wawrzyniak, a connoisseur-collector, donated more than 3,000 objects to Poland on his return. In 1973 they formed the Museum of the Nusantara Archipelago, Nusantara being a name for the Indonesian archipelago.
As objects from further regions were added, the museum became the Asia and Pacific Museum, with Wawrzyniak as its lifetime director and chief curator. Its holdings now number more than 20,000 objects from Asia, Australia and Oceania, so it suits visitors interested in the art and material culture of these regions.
