Two glass towers stacked with brand-new cars stand beside the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, and many of those cars are waiting for their owners, who come here to collect them in person. The Autostadt, or "Car City", opened in 2000 as Volkswagen's combined customer delivery centre and visitor attraction, and it draws more than two million people a year.
The site spreads across landscaped parkland and lagoons on the Mittelland Canal. Its museum, the ZeitHaus, traces the history of the automobile through vehicles from many manufacturers, not only Volkswagen. Separate pavilions present the brands of the Volkswagen Group, each with its own architecture and displays, and the grounds also hold exhibits on mobility and car design.
The Autostadt suits car enthusiasts and families as well as anyone curious about how a major manufacturer presents itself. With so much ground to cover, many visitors spend most of a day here.
