A grade II listed Georgian terrace in Sheffield's Cathedral Quarter, once used as lawyers' offices, is home to Bank Street Arts, an independent, self-funded contemporary art centre. The organisation oversaw the redevelopment of these buildings after it was founded in January 2008, initially as a studio complex for artists. It grew to include eight public galleries, thirty artist studios and a café, and from 2009 it opened to the public daily.
The centre set out to give local artwork a base, so a large proportion of its exhibitors live in South Yorkshire. That makes it best suited to visitors interested in contemporary art from the region. In 2010 Bank Street Arts became a registered charity focused on regenerating the city through artistic means.
