Two royal art societies make their home at Bankside Gallery: the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Their members are elected by their peers, a tradition some 200 years old. The gallery hosts changing exhibitions of contemporary watercolours and prints.
The gallery sits on the Thames Path, a short way along from Tate Modern. Queen Elizabeth II opened it in 1980, and it operates as an educational charity. Exhibitions come with special events such as artists' talks, and each year the gallery organises an education programme covering both the theory and the practice of art.
It suits visitors with an interest in contemporary watercolour and printmaking, and those who want to learn how art is made as well as to look at it.
