Cambridge Museum of Technology occupies a combined sewage pumping and waste destructor station built in 1894, a building now protected as a scheduled monument. Its Victorian Pumping Station, with its machinery, shows 19th-century engineering and technology.
Beyond the pumping station, displays on the industries of Cambridge reveal a side of the city's history that is separate from its famous colleges. They celebrate the achievements of local industries and the people who worked in them. In the Pye building, the story continues into the 20th century with exhibitions on local companies, including the electronics firm Pye and the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company.
Founded in 1970, the museum is an independent museum run as a charitable organisation. Its site on the River Cam has green spaces for picnics and a relaxed atmosphere. Audio-visual displays, hands-on exhibits and children's activities sit alongside the historic buildings, which makes the museum well suited to families.
