No other museum in Switzerland is devoted exclusively to the art of narrative drawing. Cartoonmuseum Basel, also known as the Centre for Narrative Art, covers comics, graphic novels, comics reportage, cartoons, satirical drawings and animated film. It suits anyone drawn to visual storytelling and to the social and political questions these forms take on, a debate the museum actively contributes to.
Its collection holds more than 10,000 original drawings by renowned Swiss and international artists. Rather than a permanent display, the museum focuses on curated exhibitions devoted either to a single artist or to a specific theme, accompanied by workshops and talks.
A library gathers primary and secondary literature on caricature, cartoons and comics, with a broad range of popular and alternative culture and subculture. The shop's postcards, monographs, cartoon books and comic books are chosen to suit each exhibition. Founded in 1979, the museum stands at St. Alban-Vorstadt 28 and is listed as a Swiss cultural property of national significance.
