The film archive of the Cinemateca Uruguaya is a declared national historic monument. By the end of the twentieth century it held more than 11,000 films, over 2,000 of them Uruguayan works. Cine Universitario del Uruguay founded this non-profit cinematheque in Montevideo in 1952 to support the cultural development of cinema and of art in general.
The Cinemateca has belonged to the International Federation of Film Archives since its inception. It is a founding member of the Latin American Coordinating Committee of Moving Image Archives and an advisory member of the Audiovisual and Film Institute of Uruguay.
Its standing is recognised at several levels. It received the Premio Morosoli, a Uruguayan cultural award, in 1995, and is designated Cultural Heritage of the City of Montevideo. In 1998 the University of the Republic's Faculty of Humanities and Educational Science recognised its importance as an educational institution, and the Ministry of Education and Culture classed it as an educational and cultural institution.
