The former residence of William II, the last King of Württemberg, now houses Stuttgart's museum of its own history. The Wilhelm Palais became the City Museum of Stuttgart in April 2018, and the museum presents itself under the name StadtPalais – Museum for Stuttgart, which visitors are likely to see on signs.
Before the museum opened, the palace served another public role: from 1965 until 2011 it was home to the Stadtbibliothek Stuttgart, the city's public library.
