Its official name is the National Film Archive, or Národní filmový archiv (NFA) in Czech. Over the decades it has carried several names: Filmový archiv until 1945, Československý filmový ústav from 1945 to 1989, and Český filmový archiv from 1990 to 1992.
The Prague institution is classed as a cinematheque, a specialised archive and a Czech research institution. In 1997 it became a founding member of the Association of European Film Archives and Cinematheques.
