Giant alebrijes, the fantastical creatures of Mexican folk art, are what the Museo de Arte Popular is best known for. The museum sponsors the yearly Noche de Alebrijes (Night of the Alebrijes), a parade in which the creatures are built on a monumental scale and paraded from the Zócalo, the city's main plaza, to the Angel of Independence monument, competing for prizes along the way.
The Folk Art Museum occupies an old fire house in Mexico City's historic center, a building in the Art Deco style. Founded in 2006, it works to promote and preserve Mexican handcrafts and folk art. Its collection includes textiles, pottery, glass, piñatas, furniture and alebrijes at a more everyday scale.
