Three palaces on Milan's Piazza della Scala house the Gallerie d'Italia - Milano, a museum of modern and contemporary art founded in 2011 by the banking group Intesa Sanpaolo and Fondazione Cariplo. Its name comes from the square, and it is also known as the Gallerie di Piazza Scala.
In the Palazzo Brentani and the Palazzo Anguissola Antona Traversi, nearly two hundred works from the Fondazione Cariplo collections focus strongly on nineteenth-century Lombard painters and sculptors, with works by Antonio Canova and Umberto Boccioni. A further section in the Palazzo della Banca Commerciale Italiana opened in October 2012 with close to two hundred works from the twentieth century, so the visit runs from the nineteenth century into the twentieth.
In 2017 the museum received a special award as Patron of the XXI century at the Corporate Art Awards ceremony at the Quirinal Palace, hosted by Italian President Sergio Mattarella. It suits visitors drawn to Lombard art of the nineteenth century and to Italian art of the century that followed.
