The H'ART Museum occupies the Amstelhof, a long 17th-century building on the bank of the Amstel that served for more than three centuries as a home for elderly residents. From 2009 the building housed Hermitage Amsterdam, a branch of the State Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 the museum ended that link and reopened under its new name, now working with partners such as the British Museum, the Centre Pompidou and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
The museum has no large permanent collection of its own. Instead, it presents major temporary exhibitions drawn from its partners' holdings, so what is on view changes over time. The building is part of the experience, with its classical facade, inner courtyard garden and setting on the river.
With around 375,000 visitors a year, it is one of Amsterdam's busier exhibition venues.
