Designed by I. M. Pei, this building on Columbia Point in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood is the official repository for the original papers and correspondence of the Kennedy Administration. It is the presidential library and museum of John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, who served from 1961 to 1963.
The holdings related to his presidency include some 24 million documents, about 400,000 photographs and thousands of video and audio recordings. The library also keeps special collections of published and unpublished material, among them books and papers by and about Ernest Hemingway. That makes it a draw for people researching the writer as well as for those interested in the Kennedy presidency.
President Jimmy Carter and members of the Kennedy family dedicated the library and museum in 1979. They are part of the Presidential Library System, administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. Nearby on Columbia Point are the University of Massachusetts Boston, the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, and the Massachusetts Archives and Commonwealth Museum.
