Taiwan's third public art museum, after the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts (高雄市立美術館) opened in 1994 in Gushan District. It was founded by the Kaohsiung City Government and has been run by the city's Bureau of Cultural Affairs since 2003. The museum covers about 33,000 square metres.
The museum sits within Neiweipi Cultural Park, a site of about 40 hectares. The museum was finished during the park's first stage of construction, from 1989 to 1994. Later work added an entrance plaza, a sculpture park and an ecology park, so the surrounding grounds extend a visit beyond the galleries themselves.
