Frank Gehry's building is the reason many people come: a cluster of white volumes wrapped in twelve curved glass sails, rising from the edge of the Bois de Boulogne on the western side of Paris. Signs call it the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Commissioned by Bernard Arnault and the LVMH group, it opened in 2014 and draws more than 700,000 visitors a year.
Inside, eleven galleries of varied shapes and sizes show modern and contemporary art. Some exhibitions draw on the foundation's own collection, and large loan exhibitions have made it one of the city's most talked-about venues. A lower level holds an auditorium used for concerts and performances. Beside a cascading pool, Olafur Eliasson's installation of mirrors and yellow light lines the grotto.
Stairways lead up to roof terraces set between the sails, with views across the trees to the towers of La Défense. Walking around the building is as much part of the visit as the galleries, and architecture enthusiasts in particular will find plenty to study.
