Portugal's main museum of Chinese artefacts and artworks, the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre Museum, also known as the Macau Museum, was created to document relations between Portugal and China. Founded in 1999, it holds more than 3,500 works of art.
The museum has two complementary sections. The ground floor examines the historical and cultural condition of Macau in the 16th and 17th centuries. The first floor houses the Chinese Art Collection, which includes decorative artworks, costumes and a collection of opium-smoking paraphernalia. Its most important holding is an extensive collection of Chinese ceramics.
The museum suits visitors interested in Chinese art, especially ceramics, and in the shared history of Portugal and Macau.
