For more than a century, the Memphis Zoo has been a major tenant of Overton Park in Midtown Memphis, on land set aside for it in the park's 1888 master plan and still owned by the City of Memphis. Created in April 1906, the zoo covers 76 acres, of which about 55 are developed.
More than 3,500 animals from over 500 species live across three zones holding 19 exhibits, among them Teton Trek, Northwest Passage and China. Much of what visitors see today follows more than 77 million dollars spent on renovation and expansion since the early 1990s.
The zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. In 2008, TripAdvisor ranked it the top zoo in the United States based on visitor opinions.
