The Migros Museum of Contemporary Art (Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst) is funded by Migros, a Swiss cooperative society that dedicates one percent of its earnings to culture through what it calls the Kulturprozent. The museum opened in 1996 as the successor to the Halle für Internationale neue Kunst, which operated from 1978 to 1981.
The galleries are compact, spread over two floors with a combined area of about 1,300 square metres. One floor presents works from the museum's own collection, which holds more than 1,300 works by some 700 artists. The other floor is given over to temporary exhibitions. The museum is listed as a Swiss cultural property of national significance.
Its size and its focus on contemporary art suit visitors who want a concentrated look at recent artistic practice rather than a broad historical survey.
