Moscow Zoo is one of the largest zoos in Russia and one of the oldest in Europe. It was founded in 1864 by professor-biologists from Moscow State University and has been run by the Government of Moscow since 1922. As of 2019 it housed about 10,531 animals of 1,267 species.
