Mudam occupies a building designed by the architect I. M. Pei on the site of the old Fort Thüngen, at the southwestern edge of Luxembourg City's Kirchberg plateau. Its full name is the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art, or Musée d'art moderne Grand-Duc Jean in French, though it is known everywhere by its abbreviation.
Founded in 2006, the museum is devoted to modern art and holds its own art collection. It stands close to many of the European Union institutions based in the city.
