Founded in 1964, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal is Canada's first museum devoted to contemporary art. Its collection numbers more than 8,000 pieces, and it suits visitors whose interest lies in contemporary art.
The museum stands on the Place des festivals in the Quartier des spectacles, Montreal's entertainment district, and forms part of the Place des Arts complex. It has occupied these premises since 1992. Before that it moved several times. It began in the Place Ville-Marie, relocated to the Château Dufresne in 1965, and in 1968 took over an exhibition gallery built for Expo 67, the world's fair held in Montreal.
