Raoul Dufy's La Fée Électricité, painted for the 1937 International Exposition, fills an entire curved room here and traces the history of electricity across hundreds of panels. Nearby, a dedicated gallery shows Henri Matisse's La Danse de Paris in two versions, an unfinished one and the final one, painted in the early 1930s.
The Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris is the City of Paris's museum of modern and contemporary art. It occupies the east wing of the Palais de Tokyo, a colonnaded building constructed for the same 1937 exposition and facing the Seine. The museum opened in 1961. The west wing houses a separate contemporary art centre.
The collection follows twentieth-century art from Fauvism and Cubism through the School of Paris, with works by Picasso, Braque, Léger, Modigliani, Bonnard and Robert and Sonia Delaunay. It continues into later movements and contemporary practice. The museum draws more than 800,000 visitors a year and suits anyone interested in how art in Paris developed over the past century.
