Museum of Art and History (collection)

The Museum of Art and History in Fribourg offers a rewarding way to explore the city's cultural memory, bringing together fine art, archaeology, and everyday objects in one thoughtful collection. A visit here feels like moving through layers of time, from the region's earliest traces to works that reflect Fribourg's artistic life across the centuries.

As you walk through the galleries, you encounter paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, and historical artifacts that reveal how people in this part of Switzerland have lived, believed, and created. Sacred art holds an important place, reflecting Fribourg's long religious history, while portraits, furnishings, and objects from daily life give the collection a more intimate, human scale.

The setting adds to the experience. Housed in a historic building, the museum has the quiet atmosphere of a place made for close looking. It invites you to slow down, notice details, and connect individual objects to the wider story of the canton.

For visitors curious about Fribourg itself, this museum is an ideal starting point: rich in local character, varied in scope, and full of discoveries that make the past feel present.
