Believed to be the only museum devoted to motherhood and the role of the mother, the Museum of Motherhood, known as M.O.M., sets out to explore and understand American mothers, fathers and families. Its exhibits feature the work of international artists alongside student-made art, and the museum has drawn attention for its aim of ascribing value to caregiving.
The museum was conceived in 2003 by Martha Joy Rose, lead singer of Housewives on Prozac and founder of the Mamapalooza Festival. It first opened with a small gallery on Main Street in Dobbs Ferry, New York, and from 2011 to 2014 occupied a donated pop-up space in Manhattan's Yorkville neighborhood. It then took its exhibits online before moving in 2016 to the Historic Kenwood Artists Enclave in St. Petersburg, Florida. Today it is a one-room museum in a St. Petersburg space known as The Factory.
