A working tramway, the Western Springs tramway, links the two sites of the Museum of Transport and Technology, widely known as MOTAT. One site is MOTAT Great North Road and the other is the MOTAT Aviation Hall on Motions Road, both in Western Springs, Auckland. The tramway is one of the museum's live exhibits, which show transport in working order rather than only on static display.
The collections include large holdings of civilian and military aircraft as well as other land transport vehicles. Alongside these, exhibitions cover transportation, science and history.
MOTAT was established in 1960 and formally opened in 1964 as a place to preserve trams and early New Zealand transportation technologies. Volunteers still do much of the work of running the museum, supported by full-time professional museum staff.
