Kraków's state-run photography museum spreads across three sites, two of them in repurposed historic buildings. Officially the Walery Rzewuski Museum of Photography (Muzeum Fotografii w Krakowie), it is known by the short name MuFo. Its original building stands at Józefitów 16 in the Krowodrza district. MuFo Strzelnica opened in 2018 in a historic shooting-range building on Królowej Jadwigi Street, and MuFo Rakowicka followed in 2021 in an old Austrian barracks on Rakowicka Street.
The museum collects, studies and promotes historical photographs. Alongside its exhibitions, it holds a collection of early photographic equipment and a large library of albums, archives, catalogues, books and manuals. It also hosts international symposiums.
Founded in 1986 as the only museum of its kind, three years before the collapse of the Soviet empire, it came through that transition by launching new programmes. Its equipment collection and research library make it well suited to visitors with a serious interest in the history of photography.
