Azerbaijan's largest art museum holds more than 15,000 artworks across two neighbouring 19th-century buildings in Baku. On signs it appears as Azərbaycan Milli İncəsənət Muzeyi. The buildings, with architecture credited to Nikolaus von der Nonne, are listed as a cultural heritage monument of Azerbaijan.
More than 3,000 works are on permanent display in 60 rooms, while about 12,000 more are kept in storage. To bring more of the stored works into view, the museum periodically changes its displays, so a return visit may turn up pieces not shown before.
The museum was founded in 1936. In 1943 it was named after Rustam Mustafayev, a prominent Azerbaijani scenic designer and theatre artist.
