National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design

The first version of Edvard Munch's The Scream, from 1893, is among the more than 400,000 works in Norway's national collection of art, architecture and design. The museum, signed in Norwegian as Nasjonalmuseet, holds the Norwegian state's public collection in these fields and brings it together under one roof, with objects ranging from antiquity to the present day.

The museum was formed in 2003 by merging five institutions: the National Gallery of Norway, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Architecture, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, and the Museum of Industrial Art. In 2022 it opened a new building at Vestbanehallen in central Oslo, which houses the entire collections of all five former museums.

Because painting, architecture and design share one building, the museum suits visitors who want to see Norway's largest collection across all three fields in a single visit. It is state-owned and managed by the Norwegian Ministry of Culture.
