The royal barges used in Bangkok's Royal Barge Procession are kept here, in a former dry dock on the northern rim of the Bangkok Noi canal in Bangkok Noi District. It is a maritime museum devoted to these ceremonial vessels.
The building's history is part of what visitors see. The dock once housed barges and warships under the care of the Bureau of the Royal Household and the Royal Thai Navy. Both the dock and the barges were severely damaged by bombing during the Second World War. In 1949 the Fine Arts Department restored them as part of Thailand's cultural heritage, and once repairs were completed the dock became the National Museum of Royal Barges in 1972.
