The only museum to tell the whole story of the United States Army, from its founding in 1775 to the present day, opened in 2020 on the grounds of Fort Belvoir in Virginia, south of Washington. Its long, stainless-steel-clad building houses large-scale scenes in which vehicles, weapons and lifelike figures are set in context alongside the personal stories of individual soldiers.
The galleries move chronologically through the nation's wars, from the Revolution through two world wars, Korea and Vietnam to recent conflicts. Highlights include a First World War Renault tank, a landing craft from the D-Day beaches and Cobra King, the Sherman tank that broke through to Bastogne in 1944. Other galleries explore the Army's role in American society and honor recipients of the Medal of Honor.
The museum draws around three-quarters of a million visitors a year. It suits families, history enthusiasts and veterans alike, and seeing the main galleries properly takes several hours.
