Taiwan's first museum devoted entirely to ceramics stands in Yingge, a New Taipei district whose kilns have made pottery for around two centuries. Opened in 2000, the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum (新北市立鶯歌陶瓷博物館) traces the story of Taiwanese ceramics from early pottery to the town's growth as the island's best-known pottery centre. It draws more than a million visitors a year.
The galleries cover the history of ceramic making in Taiwan, the techniques and tools behind it, and the role of Yingge's workshops and factories in that story. Displays also extend to industrial and technical ceramics and to contemporary studio work by Taiwanese and international artists.
Outside, a landscaped ceramics park sets large works among lawns and water features and is popular with families. The museum suits anyone curious about craft or Taiwanese material culture, and it pairs naturally with the pottery shops and studios in the surrounding streets of Yingge.
