The North Carolina Museum of History traces its roots to 1902, when it began as a Hall of History collecting objects from the state's past. Today it occupies a building on Bicentennial Plaza in downtown Raleigh, across from the State Capitol and beside the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. It draws close to 300,000 visitors a year.
The core of the museum is its long-term exhibition, The Story of North Carolina. It follows the state from its earliest American Indian inhabitants through colonial settlement, the Revolution, the Civil War and the changes of the twentieth century, using artifacts, documents and recreated settings. The museum also houses the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, which honours athletes, coaches and teams with ties to the state. Changing exhibitions on regional history and culture fill the remaining galleries.
The museum suits families, school groups and anyone curious about the history of North Carolina and the wider South.
