Much of Ostrava Zoo sits within mature woodland in the Slezská Ostrava district, so paths between enclosures pass through mixed forest rather than open lawns. That setting gives the zoo much of its character, and it also maintains extensive plantings that have earned it the formal name Zoo a botanická zahrada Ostrava (Ostrava Zoo and Botanical Garden), which appears on signs.
Visitors find animals from several continents, with Asian elephants among the best-known residents. The grounds are large and wooded, with plenty of walking between exhibits. Plant collections run alongside the animal areas, so the visit feels as much like a park as a zoo.
The zoo is one of the most visited attractions in the Moravian-Silesian Region, drawing more than 400,000 people a year. It suits families and anyone happy to spend an unhurried day walking outdoors.
