Parc Phœnix is best known for the Diamant Vert, a vast faceted glass greenhouse that ranks among the largest in Europe. Inside, a sequence of climate zones recreates tropical and subtropical environments, from humid rainforest to drier landscapes, with plants growing alongside birds, reptiles and other small animals.
Outside the greenhouse, the botanical and zoological park is laid out as themed gardens around a central lake that is home to water birds. The grounds sit in Nice's western Arénas district, close to the airport and the Promenade des Anglais. Since opening in 1990, the park has drawn more than 400,000 visitors a year. On the lakeshore stands the Musée des Arts Asiatiques, a white marble and glass building designed by Kenzo Tange.
The park suits families and anyone interested in plants and gardens, and it offers a green, largely sheltered alternative to the city's beaches and old town.
