Port Discovery Children's Museum occupies Baltimore's historic Wholesale Fish Market building in the Inner Harbor, a structure that briefly housed a shopping mall and entertainment complex called The Fishmarket. That venture opened in November 1988 and closed in July 1989 after financial and operational problems. The museum itself grew out of the 1990 merger of the Cloisters Children's Museum and the Maryland Children's Museum, and the Rouse Co. and Walt Disney Imagineering worked together on redeveloping the building.
Today the non-profit museum fills 80,000 square feet across three floors with interactive, educational exhibits and programs. It is designed for children from birth through age 10 and the caregivers who come with them, which makes it best suited to families with babies, toddlers and young school-age children. More than a quarter of a million visitors come each year.
The museum is served by the Shot Tower/Market Place station on the Baltimore Metro Subway.
