Bristol's oldest art gallery, the Royal West of England Academy (RWA) was founded in 1844 and occupies a Grade II* listed building in Clifton, near the junction of Queens Road and Whiteladies Road. The Grade II* listing marks the building as of particular architectural or historic importance.
Inside are five galleries with an exhibition programme of historic and contemporary British art, which suits visitors interested in British art across periods. The RWA is an independent museum and a charitable organisation. It is also an academy: its elected members, the Royal West of England Academicians, use the letters RWA after their names.
