Dinosaurs dominate the Senckenberg Museum, home to one of Europe's best-known dinosaur displays. Among them is a rare Edmontosaurus "mummy," a fossil that preserves impressions of the animal's skin, alongside towering skeletons in the main hall. Signs and the building itself use the German name, Naturmuseum Senckenberg.
Beyond the dinosaurs, the museum covers the breadth of natural history, from fossils and minerals to mounted animals and displays on evolution and ecology. A highlight for many is the collection of finds from the nearby Messel Pit, a UNESCO-listed fossil site whose remarkably preserved early mammals, birds and insects offer a vivid picture of life around 47 million years ago.
The museum belongs to the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research, founded by Frankfurt citizens in 1817, and its current building on the Senckenberganlage dates from the early twentieth century. Drawing more than 600,000 visitors a year, it is especially popular with families and anyone with a passion for fossils.
