Construction of Seodaemun Prison began in 1907 under Imperial Japan, then the overlord of Korea. During Japanese rule, many people who opposed that oppression were tortured or executed there. The former prison is now a museum, Seodaemun Prison History Hall (서대문형무소역사관), and is designated one of the Historic Sites of South Korea.
The prison opened on October 21, 1908, under the name Gyeongseong Gamok. In the early part of the Japanese colonial period it was known as Keijo Prison. It was renamed Seodaemun Prison in 1923 and later went by several other names. It stands in Seodaemun District, Seoul.
