Jan Kotěra, a prominent Czech architect of the early 20th century, designed the building of the Museum of Eastern Bohemia (Muzeum východních Čech), which is itself a historic landmark in Hradec Králové. It was built between 1909 and 1912.
The building visitors see today is Kotěra's second version. His first design, presented in 1907, was criticized for its exaggerated decoration and luxury, and the city could not afford such a grand scheme. He produced a revised design in 1908.
The institution dates back to 1880 and also works as a Czech research institution. Its collections hold around half a million items.
