Armenia's official memorial to the victims of the Armenian genocide stands on the hill of Tsitsernakaberd, meaning Swallow's fortress, in Yerevan. The Armenian Genocide Memorial complex was built in 1967 to designs by the architect Arthur Tarkhanyan and is listed as a cultural heritage monument of Armenia. Most visitors know it simply as Tsitsernakaberd (Ծիծեռնակաբերդ).
Each year on 24 April, Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, thousands of Armenians gather here and lay fresh flowers in memory of those who died. Over the years, politicians, artists, musicians, athletes and religious figures from around the world have also come to pay their respects.
