Built by the Whanki Foundation to exhibit and commemorate the art of Whanki Kim, one of Korea's foremost abstract painters, the Whanki Museum stands in Buam-dong in Seoul's Jongno-gu district. It sits close to Seongbuk-dong, where Kim and his wife spent many years, and the two neighbourhoods share much of their atmosphere and natural setting.
Most of the collection is displayed in the main building, which architect Kyu Sung Woo designed specifically to showcase Kim's work. Annex 1 hosts special exhibitions and has a café and art shop on its ground floor. The newer Annex 2 is used for lectures.
The private museum opened in November 1992, two years after construction began. Its focus on a single artist makes it best suited to visitors with an interest in Korean abstract painting.
