As the only zoo in Armenia, the Yerevan Zoo, signed in Armenian as Երևանի կենդաբանական այգի (Zoological Park of Yerevan), has held a unique place in the country since its founding in 1940. It covers 35 hectares at the foot of the hills in the southeastern part of the capital.
The zoo's stated aims go beyond display. It works to preserve the wild gene pool, breeds rare and endangered species in captivity, studies the prevention of animal diseases and spreads environmental knowledge, which gives it particular interest for visitors drawn to wildlife conservation.
