Zoorasia arranges its animals by the world's climate zones and regions rather than by species. Visitors walk a long loop through landscaped habitats representing tropical Asian forest, subarctic forest, the Oceanian grassland, the Central Asian highlands, the Amazon, the African rainforest, the Japanese countryside and the African savanna, with planting and scenery designed to suggest each environment.
Its official name is Yokohama Zoological Gardens, and signs often show the Japanese name よこはま動物園ズーラシア. It opened in 1999 in the green western suburbs of Yokohama and is among the larger zoos in Japan. The okapi is one of its best-known residents. It is a rare animal in Japanese zoos and is shown here alongside other African rainforest species.
Zoorasia draws more than a million visitors a year and is especially popular with families. The grounds are extensive and the walking routes are long, so covering all the zones comfortably usually takes most of a day.
