Part museum and part research library, the African American Museum and Library at Oakland (AAMLO) is a branch of the Oakland Public Library system devoted to preserving African American history, experiences and culture. Its library is non-circulating, so materials are consulted on site rather than borrowed.
The core of the collection is an extensive archive of diaries, correspondence, photographs and periodicals, which suits visitors interested in primary sources. The building on 14th Street in Downtown Oakland was designed by the architect Walter Danforth Bliss and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
