At The MADE, the gaming exhibits are fully playable. The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment in Oakland, California, is dedicated to digital art and gaming, and its mission is to inspire the next generation of digital creators through what it calls playable preservation. Visitors who want hands-on time with games, and aspiring digital creators in particular, are the audience the museum has in mind.
The museum was founded in 2010 by the internationally published technology journalist Alex Handy. Its board of directors and board of advisors are made up largely of gaming-industry veterans, journalists, experts and historians of the field, including Henry Lowood, a curator of Stanford University's history of science and technology and film and media collections. After two years of closure during the COVID-19 pandemic, the museum reopened in 2022 in a new location in downtown Oakland.
